Dreams Fulfilled Through Music & Parents Ask present Workshop Series #1: “Music and the Unplanned Journey”

World Alzheimer’s Day, September 21st of each year, is a day on which Alzheimer’s organizations around the world concentrate their efforts on raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, a group of disorders that impairs mental functioning. An important element of Dreams Fulfilled Through Music’s Mission is to develop a community awareness of the impact of music in the lives of persons who face specific challenges. Because our program is multi-generational and includes many Seniors, our performances at the Grace Place Alzheimer’s Day Activity Centers in San Antonio are especially meaningful. The Healing Power of Music & Alzheimer’s Disease by Gracie Bernardi Thanksgiving 2008 at the USO in downtown San antonio is a day I will never forget! Musicians from Dreams Fulfilled Through Music had taken their time on their Thanksgiving to bring musical cheer to our Soldiers and Veterans. I had an old accordion at home and had always dreamt of learning to play it, but after recently being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, I had little hope that it would ever be possible. But Dreams Fulfilled Through Music is just what is in the name — DREAMS FULFILLED! Today, almost 10 years later, I have discovered that I can learn to make my own music and fulfill the ambition to play for myself and others. But more than just learning to play, I have made new friends and experience even more joy through mentoring younger students with disabilities, especially my friend Jennifer!

These years have not been easy, but to others who are facing the challenges of Alzheimer’s, or who have a family member recently diagnosed, the power of music brings great healing and great hope!

This interactive celebration of familiar music and sing-a-longs presented by the Alamo Angels Accordion Orchestra and student soloists is open to participants, families and guests at the Day Activity Centers.
